Fanboy Wrestletronic: WWE WrestleMania Backlash 2022 + Impact Under Siege 2022

Have you recovered from WrestleMania weekend yet? Probably because there's been a ton of wrestling since then, even if we're only now checking in with Impact's Under Siege and WWE's WrestleMania Backlash. Just like last year, the Quixo-offices have mostly been obsessed with the Milwaukee Bucks playoffs run - hopefully we got our trash-game out of the way with the Celtics and we'll pick up games 3, 4, and 5. It's only the Finals where we need to do it #BucksInSix.

Let's check in with the final results from the all-new all-different Quixotronic Wrestling Shame Challenge! I finally went through all the old results and put them in Excel, so the standings are more accurate - they didn't actually change the placings, but the percentages are slightly different. Hooray?

Hooray! The winner is the one writing these previews! Yay, me. We'll do like AEW and reset the numbers starting now, so let's see if I can pull off a three-peat. I have a good feeling about it. There are also some shows that I skipped while in WrestleMania-recovery but still jotted down "picks" for before they occurred, but I'll add them to the results next time for the "purity" of the results. You can wait a little while to find out I went 2-1 for AEW Battle of the Belts II, right? Right.

As always: cards are subject to change.

Impact Under Siege 2022

Chris Sabin vs Steve Maclin

The Background: Steve Maclin most recently defeated both Chris Sabin and Jay White at Impact Rebellion 2022. Now Maclin and Sabin will face off in a singles match.

Fanboy Fantasy: They have a fun X-Division style match, and Maclin picks up the win.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Steve Maclin - Sabin doesn't need a win here.

Alex Shelley vs Mike Bailey

The Background: Mike Bailey failed to win the Impact X-Division title in a three way with former champion Trey Miguel and new champion Ace Austin at Impact Rebellion 2022. Bailey then teamed with the Motor City Machine Guns in a losing effort against Honor No More on the April 28th Impact on AXS, and tensions rose between Bailey and Shelley, so now they will fight about it.

Fanboy Fantasy: They have a fun X-Division style match, and Bailey picks up the win. The Motor City Machine Guns can get a tag team win later, but Maclin and Bailey both have their eyes on the X-Division title.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Mike Bailey - Shelley doesn't need a win here.

Bullet Club (Jay White, Chris Bey, El Phantasmo, Doc Gallows, & Karl Anderson) vs Honor No More (Eddie Edwards, Kenny King, Vincent, Matt Taven, & Mike Bennett)

The Background: Bullet Club defeated Honor No More in an 8-man contest on the April 21st Impact on AXS. Then both groups' resident tag teams, Bullet Club's Good Brothers (Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson) and Honor No More's OGK (Matt Taven & Mike Bennett) failed to win the Impact Tag Team titles at Impact Rebellion 2022. Now they will face off in a 10-man contest.

Fanboy Fantasy: The advantage goes back and forth until Karl Anderson appears to suffer an injury and Doc Gallows stays by his side while the medics attend to him, despite Jay White yelling at Sex Ferguson to get back in the ring. Phantasmo is almost pinned but White breaks it. Bey is almost pinned but White breaks it. The crowd is behind the Bullet Club fighting from underneath, and White plays into it. The OGK use quick maneuvers to corner White into bumping the referee, and White yells at them to back off while he checks on the referee himself and even calls to the medics. But with everyone distracted, Adam Cole and reDRagon hop out of the crowd and attack Edwards, Vincent, and King on the outside. The OGK are shocked, but even more shocked when both Good Brothers climb back in the ring, fully powered. Magic Killer on Bennett, Blade Runner on Taven, the referee recovers just in time for White to make the pin. Bullet Club hightail it up to the entrance while Honor No More recover, but the message is sent: Adam Cole and Jay White are definitely in cahoots. Cole motions over to reDRagon and White nods his approval. Too-Sweets go up, and Cole is officially back and reDRagon has officially joined Bullet Club ahead of Forbidden Door. But where are the Young Bucks? And does this mean Impact will cross the Forbidden Door once again?

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Bullet Club - I'm guessing even if Impact isn't invited to the AEWxNJPW show, Bullet Club still needs the "momentum" going into the show.

AAA Reina de Reinas Title Match : Deonna Purrazzo vs Taya Valkyrie ©

The Background: Deonna Purrazzo has been issuing Open Champ-Champ Challenges to defend either her ROH Women's title or AAA Reina de Reinas title. At Impact Multiverse of Matches, she defeated Faby Apache to retain her AAA title, but after the match Taya Valkyrie returned and challenged for the title. Weeks later at Impact Rebellion 2022, Valkyrie defeated Purrazzo to take the AAA Reina de Reinas title. This will be Purrazzo's rematch for the title.

Fanboy Fantasy: Fresh off losing her ROH Women’s title, Deonna Purrazzo is far more manic than she typically is in the ring. She’s been the Champ Champ for so long that she doesn’t know how to deal with anything else. Valkyrie is easily able to harness this and use it against Purrazzo, keeping the advantage all match. It’s too much and Purrazzo easily gets the pin and retains the AAA title. Purrazzo has to be dragged to the back by security after trying to tear apart the ring in disgust. A few weeks to by and when Purrazzo returns, she sets her eyes on Matt Cardona’s Impact Digital Media title - she was the original title collector so she’ll start her new collection by taking one of his.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Taya Valkyrie - Deonna Purrazzo has proven her worth, but I don't think she pulling the title back from Valkyrie this quickly.

Impact Tag Team Titles Match : The Briscoes (Jay & Mark Briscoe) vs Violent by Design (Eric Young, Deaner, &/or Joe Doering) ©

The Background: The Briscoes won the NWA Crockett Cup by defeating the Commonwealth Connection team of Doug Williams & Harry Smith at NWA Crockett Cup 2022. However, they then lost their ROH Tag Team titles to FTR at ROH Supercard of Honor XV, and then later the same night lost to the Good Brothers at Impact Multiverse of Matches. They also lost their match for the NWA Tag Team titles against Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf 450 on the April 26th NWA Power. But, they still beat Health Miller & Rhino on the April 28th Impact on AXS to become the new #1 contenders to the Impact Tag Team titles.

Fanboy Fantasy: Dem Boys start out strong, but Eric Young & Joe Doering hold their own. With Deaner distracting but not interfering on the outside, the Briscoes do their best but fail to secure a pin. Violent by Design are able to pin the Briscoes to retain their titles, and the Briscoes lose another major title match in only two months: ROH, GCW, NWA, and now Impact. With AEW, AEW ROH, and WWE likely closed to them, the Briscoes regroup and focus fighting every team they can find, but no title matches. They don’t deserve gold anymore. The Briscoes start to pick up wins again and even turn down title shots in every promotion, just focusing on fighting. This takes them all year to the next NWA Crockett Cup which includes more teams and a working relationship with everyone. The Briscoes make it to the finals again to face FTR once again, the first team to cause their downfall nearly a year prior. Briscoes pick the win and the Crockett Cup for the second year in a row, and soon the NWA Worlds Tag Team titles. Now with gold around their waists again, the Briscoes are back.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Violent by Design - I think the Briscoes losing ways will continue for a little longer before they go off and get their groove back. I can't wait for the vignettes showing this happening.

Impact Knockouts Title Match : Havok vs Tasha Steelz ©

The Background: Tasha Steelz defeated Mickie James to win the Impact Knockouts title on the Impact Sacrifice 2022. Steelz & Savanna Evans competed for the Impact Knockouts Tag Team titles at Impact Multiverse of Matches but came up short, just like Havok & Rosemary of Decay. Steelz defeated Rosemary to retain her title at Impact Rebellion 2022, but Decay got revenge on the April 28th Impact on AXS. Now Steelz will defend her title against the other member of Decay.

Fanboy Fantasy: Rosemary spends the whole match stalking Savanna Evans on the outside while Havok works on a distracted Tasha Steelz. Evans is able to counteract Rosemary and Steelz makes the pin on Havok to retain her title once again.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Tasha Steelz - Decay have been primarily a tag team for a while now, and I think there's no reason for them to stop.

Impact World Title Match : Tomohiro Ishii vs Josh Alexander ©

The Background: After a brief departure, the walking weapon Josh Alexander returned to Impact Wrestling and attacked the man who defeated him for the Impact World title, Impact World Champion Moose at the conclusion of Impact Sacrifice 2022. Things got personal as Moose invaded Alexander's home on the March 17th Impact on AXS, then Alexander and partner Jonah Rock defeated Moose and PCO at Impact Multiverse of Matches. Finally Alexander defeated Moose at Impact Rebellion 2022 to win back the title he previous held for only minutes. Alexander retained in the rematch on the April 28th Impact on AXS, after which it was mentioned his next challenger would be NJPW's Tomohiro Ishii.

Fanboy Fantasy: Josh Alexander and Tomohiro Ishii go for a good twenty minutes, exchanging hard blows. Ishii gets a few near-falls, but its Alexander who is able to put him away and get the three count, securing his second title defense. As the referee holds his hand up, Jay White and Bullet Club stroll down the entry way and surround the ring. Jay White and Adam Cole slide into the ring, Cole demanding a microphone for Bullet Club. Doc Gallows rips one from the commentator booth and hands it off to Cole who introduces Josh Alexander and Tomohiro Ishii to story time… with Jay White. As White takes the mic, he and Cole start circling Ishii and Alexander who are stuck in the center of the ring with the rest of Bullet Club acting as lumberjacks. You see, White’s home promotion, and Cole’s promotion have announced a co-event, but as of right now, while Impact has been fun, they’re not invited. Cole laughs as White holds him his finger - there is one way Impact will be invited to the dance, and that’s when he, Jay White, walks through the Forbidden Door as the new Impact World Champion. He officially challenges Josh Alexander for his title at Impact Slammiversary, because soon, Bullet Club will have all the gold in wrestling - starting here in America with Alexander’s title. Otherwise, the Door is officially locked to Impact Wrestling. At this point Ishii rams right into Cole, lifts him up and throws him out of the ring. Bullet Club rush to the ring and attack Alexander and Ishii, but Honor No More rush the ring and make the save. It’s a clusterfuck that ends with Honor No More and Bullet Club all spilling to the outside to leaving White and Alexander in the ring. White goes for a Blade Runner but Alexander is able to reverse it into a Spinning Tombstone Piledriver and then locks in an Ankle Lock. As White screams in pain, Ishii calmly hands Alexander and mic and Alexander screams: I accept!

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Josh Alexander - somebody's getting a strong win here, and it's not Ishii.

WWE WrestleMania Backlash 2022

Happy Corbin vs Madcap Moss

The Background: Madcap Moss had a great WrestleMania weekend that saw him win the Andre the Giant battle royal, something his best friend Happy Corbin did years ago. Happy Corbin did not have a great WrestleMania weekend, losing to Drew McIntyre on WWE WrestleMania 38 Saturday. Happy Corbin blamed Madcap Moss for his loss and turned on his former friend, even stealing the Andre the Giant trophy at one point. Now they will fight.

Fanboy Fantasy: Madcap Moss comes to the ring with his Andre the Giant trophy while Happy Corbin is all business: no Hawaiian shirt, no crown, no TGIF waiter suit. He’s introduced as Baron Corbin for the first time in years and he’s back to an updated version of his Lone Wolf gear. Madcap tries to laugh it off but is visibly nervous about the change. The becomes very one-sided very quickly with Corbin demolishing Moss. Corbin hits an End of Days, goes for a pin, but pulls Moss up himself after two. Corbin slides to the outside, grabs the trophy, and in full view of the referee swings the trophy into Moss’ chest to get a DQ loss. He swings again and again, denting it. He drops it on the mat, stomps it to flatten it, and then hits another End of Days to slam Moss on the trophy. Despite winning the match, Moss is not a winner. We get some montages over the next few weeks of Moss recovering and training, ditching the Madcap persona. On the Smackdown before Hell in a Cell, Riddick Moss returns, fists taped, and challenges Baron Corbin to a street fight. There won’t be any DQ finishes this time. Baron Corbin accepts, and the two men beat the shit out of each other enough to put each other over with Moss getting the victory.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Happy Corbin - the rule of WrestleMania Backlash is that the WrestleMania loser gets a WrestleMania Backlash win.

Tim: Madcap Moss

Bobby Lashley vs Omos (w/ MVP)

The Background: Bobby Lashley defeated Omos at WWE WrestleMania 38 Sunday. As his WrestleMania Backlash, MVP turned on Lashley and took on Omos as his new client on the April 4th Raw after 'Mania. MVP now talks up his new client, though Omos lost to Lashley in an arm-wrestling match on the April 25th Raw.

Fanboy Fantasy: Lashley rushes out of the gate and pummels Omos, but after a few minutes Omos slides out of the ring and reviews things with MVP. MVP gives him some pointers and Omos slides back in to meet the waiting Lashley. Lashley pummels Omos more until Omos sweeps the leg and knocks Lashley down. MVP yells commands that Omos follows point by point and dismantles Lashley. Lashley is spent when Omos lifts him up for the chokeslam, and MVP instructs him to hold Lashley up. MVP walks up to Lashley hanging in the air, does a little wave, and Omos slams him down to get the pin. MVP’s new client is working out just fine.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Omos - the rule of WrestleMania Backlash is that the WrestleMania loser gets a WrestleMania Backlash win.

Tim: Omos

AJ Styles vs Edge

The Background: Edge defeated AJ Styles after a Damian Priest distraction at WWE WrestleMania 38 Sunday. With Edge and Damian Priest making it official by naming their new group Judgment Day (didn't they still have "The Brood" under copyright?), Edge decided that his WrestleMania Backlash will be to... defeat AJ Styles again (?) as announced on the April 18th Raw. I don't think Edge understands what a WrestleMania Backlash is - either Styles needs to challenge him to get his win back, or have Styles vs Priest in some gimmick match that Edge helps his new protégé in.

Fanboy Fantasy: AJ Styles comes to the ring flanked by Finn Balor, but Edge comes to the ring alone as was promised. With Damian Priest nowhere in sight, Balor Too-Sweets Styles and heads to the back, leaving Edge and Styles alone. With an even more clear heel/face set up, the two go on to have a better match than at WrestleMania. They go back and forth, and Finn Balor is shown in the back watching the monitor looking out for Priest. Edge powers over Styles, but Styles kicks out at every pin attempt. He’s able to dodge a spear that sends Edge into the turnbuckle, giving Styles a chance to take the advantage. In the back, Balor is shown now brawling with Priest and the two spilling into the parking lot, far away from the ring. Back in the ring, Styles hits a Styles Clash for a two count. They brawl more until Styles hits not one, but two Phenomenal Forearms to pin Edge, putting them at 1 win a piece. Styles, knowing Priest is accounted for, helps Edge up and offers his hand, showing honor. Edge dusts himself off and slowly smiles - Styles quickly looks around to find Nikki Cross and Piper Niven on the outside of the ring. They slide in and approach Styles who clearly doesn’t want to fight them. They double team him anyway, laying him out. Judgment Day is now four people strong and has access to every division on Raw. In later weeks as Styles and Balor deal with JD longer, they need an ally that will help them fight all of Judgment Day: the returning Bayley who officially joins the WWE arm of Bullet Club along with Styles and Balor, and the also returning (but still crazy) Alexa Bliss who acts in a Hannibal Lector-like mentor role to help the three understand the insanity to Edge’s group.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: AJ Styles - the rule of WrestleMania Backlash is that the WrestleMania loser gets a WrestleMania Backlash win.

Tim: Edge

Cody Rhodes vs Seth Rollins

The Background: Cody Rhodes returned to WWE after helping start AEW to appear as Seth Rollins' mystery opponent at WWE WrestleMania 38 Saturday, and won! Despite declaring that he has returned to win the WWE World title for his father Dusty Rhodes on the April 4th Raw after 'Mania, he forgot about his WrestleMania Backlash - Seth Rollins challenged him to a rematch where he is fully aware of his opponent going into the match. In the mean time, the two met on opposite sides of an 8-man tag match where Rhodes (along with Ezekiel/Elias & RK-Bro) defeated Rollins (along with Kevin Owens & the Usos) again on the April 25th Raw.

Fanboy Fantasy: Seth Rollins enters first and starts pacing the ring, calling out for Cody Rhodes to come out because he’s ready for him. The American Nightmare comes out slowly, toying with Rollins. Once the match starts, Rollins has a burst of energy and takes an early advantage - because he knew who his opponent was going into the match. Rhodes is able to slow the match down and take over. They go a solid 30 minutes and are able to make it entertaining the whole time, but Rhodes is able to dodge a Curbstomp and reverse into two Cross-Rhodes to get the pin again. No WrestleMania Backlash for you, Rollins. Cody offers his hand to Rollins who after a minute of thinking about it, shakes his hand.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Seth Rollins - the rule of WrestleMania Backlash is that the WrestleMania loser gets a WrestleMania Backlash win.

Tim: Seth Rollins

Smackdown Women's Title "I Quit" Match : Ronda Rousey vs Charlotte Flair ©

The Background: Charlotte Flair retained her Smackdown Women's title at WWE WrestleMania 38 Saturday by defeating Ronda Rousey, though Rousey was able to make Flair tap during a ref-bump. As WrestleMania Backlash, Rousey challenged Flair to an "I Quit" match because she will make her submit once again. The two competed in an "I Quit" Beat the Clock challenge on the April 29th Smackdown, and Rousey was able to make Shotzi Blackheart submit faster than Flair could make Aliyah submit.

Fanboy Fantasy: This is a brutal match where both women get busted open early. Whenever Flair tries to get Rousey to say “I Quit,” Rousey headbutts or bites the microphone. Flair says nothing when asked so Rousey hits her in the head with the microphone. A lot. Both women are noticeably limping halfway through the match but neither will submit. While Rousey has Flair the armbar, pipe in a “crack” sound as if Rousey actually broke Flair’s arm. Flair can scream in pain, curse (bleeped though), and finally when the referee asks if she quits, she says “yes.” Yep, Flair is going to return and go full Tully Blanchard and deny she ever said “I Quit” because she didn’t. Rousey is your new Smackdown Women’s Champion and Flair comes back in a cast complaining that she never should have lost.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Ronda Rousey - the rule of WrestleMania Backlash is that the WrestleMania loser gets a WrestleMania Backlash win.

Tim: Ronday Rousey

The Bloodline (Roman Reigns, Jey & Jimmy Uso) vs Drew McIntyre, Matt Riddle, & Randy Orton

The Background: The Usos retained their Smackdown Tag Team titles against Rick Boogs & Shinsuke Nakamura at WWE WrestleMania 38 Saturday while RK-Bro were able to retain their Raw Tag Team titles against both Alpha Academy and the Street Profits at WWE WrestleMania 38 Sunday. However, Roman Reigns also defeated Brock Lesnar to unify his WWE Universal title and the WWE World title, and his WrestleMania Backlash is that he wants his cousins to do the same and unify the Raw and Smackdown Tag Team titles. Matt Riddle defeated Jimmy Uso on the April 15th Smackdown, and then defeated Jey Uso on the April 22nd Smackdown. RK-Bro (along with Cody Rhodes & Ezekiel/Elias) defeated the Usos (along with Seth Rollins & Kevin Owens) on the April 25th Raw, so the contract signing between the teams on the April 29th Smackdown did not go well - so not well that the unification is now off and Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns have been plugged into the match. What. Why. Huh. Ass.

Fanboy Fantasy: Earlier in the show, Heyman is shown backstage alone somehow and suddenly is hit by an RKO from a running Matt Riddle. Unification, bro, Riddle whispers before running away. Later on after the Bloodline have checked on Heyman and left him again, Orton shows up and hits another RKO. Unification, Paul, Orton whispers before walking off. Finally before the match, Heyman is in a neck brace and protected by Reigns and the Usos. Drew McIntyre calmly walks up to them with papers: do what the WWE Universe (cheers) wants - make this match matter. Make it worthy of the Head of the Table. Winners get the unified Tag Team titles… and the unified WWE title. Unless Roman doesn’t trust his own family. With Heyman moaning in the background, Roman signs the papers without breaking eye contact with McIntyre. The match quickly devolves to a tornado tag match with Heyman announcing from backstage. It soon becomes power move after power move. Orton and Riddle both get near pins with RKOs while McIntyre hits a Claymore on Reigns on the outside but struggles to get him back in the ring. With McIntyre busy, the Usos are able to hit a combination on Orton and pin him to unify the Tag Team titles. On the following Raw, Orton admits he let his partner down, he got pinned by the Usos - but he wasn’t pinned by Reigns. He acknowledges that he was the better man last night, but challenges the Head of the Table to a WWE title match. The Bloodline come out and put over Orton, especially as someone that unified titles back in 2013. But he took the loss. But Roman is a giving god, so he will allow Matt Riddle to have a title match, simply to show that the Bloodline will pin both of them and send them to the back of the line for all the gold. This sets up Riddle/Reigns and eventually Orton/Reigns while McIntyre bides his time until either SummerSlam or Clash at the Castle.

Quixotronic Bullpen Predictions:

Kyle: Drew McIntyre & RK-Bro - the rule of WrestleMania Backlash is that the WrestleMania loser gets a WrestleMania Backlash win (everyone got wins here, so I'm counting 2 title wins for the Bloodline to McIntyre/RK-Bro's only 1 title win at 'Mania).

Tim: Drew McIntyre & RK-Bro
