We’re back only a week late with a look back at the latest WWE Money in the Bank show. It was a fun night with only 6-ish matches and a shorter than average but very welcome running time (just like my wife says). We got another cinematic style match in our main event, two world-ish title matches, and R-Truth showed up, so let’s get to it!

WWE Smackdown Tag Team Titles Match: Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler & Wesley Blake) vs John Morrison & Miz vs Lucha House Party (Gran Metalik & Lince Dorado) vs New Day (Big E & Kofi Kingston) ©
Previously on Fanboy Wrestletronic: I’d have Morrison take the pin to start off my theoretical Morrison/Miz feud that still hasn’t happened somehow. Plus then we can get Kofi and more importantly Big E (and Xavier Woods when he returns) into a nice singles push potentially against Sami Zayn (and Cesaro and Nakamura).
And now the conclusion: Throughout the match I think they were able to spotlight the two lower teams on the totem pole in Lucha House Party and Forgotten Sons. Gran Metalik specifically started the match and finished the match by eating the pin, but played rag doll for everyone else for most of the match. The announce team put over LHP when they hit a few sweet spots as well as history/characters of the Forgotten Sons (at least Cutler is former military?). Of course Miz/Morrison and New Day stayed powered up and Big E got the pin on Gran Metalik.
I still see no full reason to tag the tag titles off New Day until Xavier Woods returns. Hopefully we’ll be able to build LHP and FS as legitimate threats to the titles soon and one of them can get the spotlight whenever New Day takes another pause on the titles. And if we’re going for the most reigns at some point that means they’ll still need to drop the belts another couple of times I think.

MVP Bobby Lashley vs R-Truth

And now the conclusion: R-Truth hit the ring and played to the non-existent crowd as only he truly can. MVP came out as his original opponent but then Bobby Lashley showed up and informed MVP that “he’s got this one.” Lashley made short work of R-Truth who struggled to get his entrance gear (and headphones!) off before Lashley took him to the woodshed. Spear for the win.
I assume we may finally be committing to making Lashley a thing? MVP should be a better mouthpiece for him than Lana was, and I’ve read they worked well together in Impact a few years ago. R-Truth is an easy name guy to get squashed without worry of him losing anything as he’s transcended to being the Deadpool of the WWE Universe. He’ll heal, bounce back, and make witty comments while being vaguely aware that he is a wrestler on a TV show instead of an athlete in competitive matches.

WWE Smackdown Women’s Title Match: Tamina vs Bayley ©
Previously on Fanboy Wrestletronic: Bayley wins the match but needs help from Sasha Banks again.
Fanboy Prediction: Bayley - I’m still not sold on Tamina being a threat to the title. The endgame should be Bayley and Banks for the title someday, and I see no need for a pit stop with Tamina.
And now the conclusion: Tamina started off strong until Bayley was able to wrap Tamina’s knee around the ring post. Tamina broke free and the rest of the match was surprisingly evenly matched. After a bit where Bayley tried to spit water at Tamina, she bounced Bayley off the apron into a clothesline which was pretty sweet. Bayley took the win after reversing a Samoan drop into a crucifix pin.
This match was a lot more fun than I expected. It got extra points right away with Sasha Banks sporting a Wonder Girl outfit. Tamina and Bayley had some fun logical spots, and the finish was believable for the size difference between the two. I wouldn’t seeing a brief feud between Bayley and Dana Brooke after her fun performance in the ladder(s) match(es) before moving onto someone bigger… like finally Sasha?

Fanboy Prediction Score: Kyle (Bayley, 2-0); Tim (Tamina, 0-2)
WWE Universal Title Match: Bray Wyatt vs Braun Strowman ©
Previously on Fanboy Wrestletronic: ...Wyatt transforms back into the Fiend, teleports up the ramp to Strowman, and then both teleport away together. Wyatt/Fiend become Strowman’s mouthpiece and handler where Wyatt now controls the Monster Among Men (™) and the title but doesn’t have to do any of the work.
And now the conclusion: Bray looks to be using the Fiend more like how Finn Balor used the Demon apparently as this was children’s host Bray Wyatt. Braun pretty much manhandled Bray, even kicking out of a Sister Abigail. Braun brought out his old Black Sheep mask, exciting Bray and all the Firefly Funhouse puppets, but Strowman turned on Bray, destroyed the mask, and hit the Powerslam for the win.
Since this was host Bray instead of Fiend Bray, I’m assuming this story will continue. Strowman thinks he’s put Wyatt behind him, but I doubt it’ll be that easy and still hope for a re-teaming of the two in some form. Bigger guys are more fun when they want to destroy and I still want Braun and Roman to get back to attempted murder when Reigns comes back, and Strowman being controlled by Bray is a good enough reason for me.

WWE World Title Match: Seth Rollins vs Drew McIntyre ©
Previously on Fanboy Wrestletronic: McIntyre needs a good strong win, and Rollins still has enough credibility to serve up that strong win for McIntyre.
And now the conclusion: Rollins started off with new music, now with 80% messiah vibes. Rollins worked McIntyre’s leg early though McIntyre was able to work past it. Rollins dished out more damage, but McIntyre became like the Hulk - the more Rollins hurt him, the angrier and thus stronger he got. Rollins hit a Falcon Arrow but McIntyre kicked out at one. Rollins started to lose it and went for a chair, but Drew was able to hit the Claymore for the pin.
They pretty much did what I hoped - gave us a fun 10-15 minute match. How about that? Based on the fallout on the next night’s Raw I’m guessing this is it for the feud and that’s okay - we got McIntyre a solid title defense and now we can start driving Rollins crazy after a loss and what I believe is frustration from becoming a father? Hopefully this will lead to trouble between him and his disciple/surrogate son Buddy Murphy while McIntyre moves on to a program with… Baron Corbin? Sure, why not.

Money in the Bank(s) Ladder(s) Match(es): AJ Styles vs Aleister Black vs Asuka vs Baron Corbin vs Carmella vs Dana Brooke vs Daniel Bryan vs Lacey Evans vs Nia Jax vs Otis Dozovic vs Rey Mysterio vs Shayna Baszler
Previously on Fanboy Wrestletronic: This should be going on the entirety of the show and have them continually cut back to WWE HQ to show bits and pieces of the match(es) in between and during the other matches.
And now the conclusion: The match started with Asuka literally dancing onto the screen, diving onto everyone, and then dancing off. That’s how you know it’s a party. On the men’s side, Baron Corbin continued the now-tradition of fighting in a WWE gym and destroying a huge mirror. Otis gleefully blocked AJ Styles by placing weights on him. AJ cried out to Rey Mysterio for help, received none, and cried some more. In the Money in the Bank conference room, Dana Brooke grabbed a briefcase only to be shut down by Stephanie McMahon. Other cameos hiding in the offices included Brother Love, a Doink, Paul Heyman, John Laurinaitis and of course Vince McMahon. While hunting Rey after escaping the weights AJ got scared by an Undertaker poster which gave us a FLASHBACK to his Boneyard match as AJ is now for serious afraid of caskets and the Undertaker. Elsewhere Otis saw food, girated, powered up, and started a food fight. This led to my 3-year old son to quietly say “I love Otis.” A minute later when Otis was not on screen, he quietly asked “Where is Otis?” fulfilling the prophecy set out by Poochie oh so many years ago.
Eventually everyone makes it to the roof. Nia Jax tossed Asuka into the ring, prompting my wife to ask “Why did she do that? Now she’s closer to the briefcases?” because you should never stop looking for logic in your wrestling set in a corporate office that has appearances by clowns and caskets. Asuka and Corbin climb the ladder at the same time, Asuka kicks Corbin off the ladder and retrieves the women’s briefcase for the win. This brings the rest of the men out as Baron Corbin throws not one, but two of his opponents over the roof to their apparent doom, officially murdering Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black. They were never seen again back on Raw the next night like nothing happened. With half of the men out (I’ll be honest, I don’t remember what befell Daniel Bryan) it appeared to be down to AJ and Corbin who both made it to the top of the ladder only for Deux ex Elias to appear to EL KABONG~! Corbin as he and AJ were both pulling the briefcase down. They both lose their grip and the briefcase falls down into Otis short sweating waiting arms. “I love Otis.”
This was a very fun match and was absolutely ridiculous. It was filled with bits as it should have been. You can’t have wrestlers have a serious match while they’re in a corporate building and you need to lean into how odd the whole set-up is. I hope during the Quixotine we continue to get at least one cinematic match every pay per view because they are still batting 1.000 in my book. Asuka was a fun winner and as we saw on the next night’s Raw, she didn’t just win the contract but the WWE Raw Women’s title itself as Becky Lynch forfeited the title due to being pregnant. Don’t worry, WWE is already selling the Ma(n) shirts. On the other hand, Otis had said in previous interviews that he’d use the briefcase for him and Tucky to get a shot at the WWE Smackdown Tag Team titles but on the next Smackdown he had himself a tag team match with Braun Strowman. Perhaps Otis will use the case for himself? Is he your next WWE Universal Champion? Yes, we’re at that stage of the Quixotine.
